Commercial Venues Steel Frame Building

Product Description
Heavy Duty Steel Frame Structures for Commercial Venues

A commercial building puts the structure on show. Atria, exhibition halls, showrooms and covered courts are usually built with the steel left visible, so the frame has to carry the load and still look right — which is why the finish matters as much as the section size on these projects. These frames are built in Q235, Q345 or Q460C steel, in I-beam, H-beam, channel and angle sections, with a painted finish.

Steel Frame in a Commercial Building

Commercial structures ask for two things that pull against each other: a wide, open floor with as few columns as possible, and a frame that is presentable because people will see it.

A clear-span steel frame meets the first. The second comes down to the finish and the detailing, which is why we treat paint as a specification item on commercial projects rather than a default.

Layouts also change in commercial buildings — a tenant moves out, a floor is re-divided — so the frame is designed to allow later adjustment rather than to lock the plan in.

Heavy Duty: The Steel Grades

Grade is chosen by the load and the span, not by a house standard.

  • Q235 — the general-purpose grade for lighter frames.
  • Q345 — higher strength, for the main frames of larger buildings.
  • Q460C — high-strength steel for heavy loads and long spans, where a deeper or heavier section would otherwise be needed.

Specification Q345B / Q460C is used for these heavy-duty frames. Yield strength runs up to 345 MPa.

Cross-Section Shapes

The section is matched to what each member is doing:

  • I-beam and H-beam — main beams and columns, where bending governs.
  • Channel — purlins, secondary framing and edge members.
  • Angle — bracing, connections and light framing.

Using the right shape for each position keeps the weight down without cutting the load capacity.

Paint Coating

For commercial work the coating is specified, not assumed:

  • Surface preparation — rust removal to a defined grade before priming.
  • Primer and topcoat — applied to the system the project calls for, in the colour the client wants.
  • Paint versus galvanizing — galvanizing lasts longer in aggressive environments but has a grey metallic look. On a visible commercial frame, paint is usually chosen for appearance and galvanizing for the parts that are not seen.

We will say which system suits the location and the look rather than quoting one by default.

Connections and Bolts

Connections are bolted or welded.

  • Bolts: Grade 8.8 high-strength bolts with a specified minimum tensile strength.
  • Welds: strength depends on the welding method and electrode type — stated per project rather than quoted as a single figure.

Bolted connections allow factory trial assembly, which speeds erection and makes later adjustment possible.

Seismic and Load Behaviour

Steel has good toughness and ductility, so a framed building absorbs seismic movement rather than failing suddenly — which is why it is common in earthquake zones. Frames are calculated for the wind, snow and seismic load at your site, not a default figure. Where a commercial building carries plant, a crane or heavy services, those loads are designed in from the start.

Prefabrication and Programme

The frame is prefabricated in the factory and assembled on site. That shortens the construction cycle and cuts the plant and manpower needed on a constrained commercial site, where access and working hours are usually limited.

Fabrication runs across dedicated lines for cutting, forming, welding, rust removal, painting and testing, with lifting capacity in the fabrication shop up to 50 tonnes.

Sustainability

Steel is over 90% recyclable and construction waste is low compared with a concrete frame. At end of life the structure has scrap value rather than disposal cost.

What We Need to Quote
  1. Use — retail, exhibition, showroom, covered court, mixed-use
  2. Building size — length × width × eave height; clear span required
  3. Steel grade — Q235, Q345 or Q460C
  4. Loads — snow, wind, seismic, and any hung or crane load
  5. Finish — galvanized or painted; if painted, the system and colour
  6. Roof and wall build-up — glazing, panel or cladding
  7. Site — coastal or inland, for the coating choice

Send these and we return a layout drawing, the section sizes and a price.

Packing and Transport

Heavy sections ship as bundles and, where the member is oversize, on roll-on/roll-off ships, barges or vehicles with special loading equipment. Packing is planned around the transport route, since on a commercial project the site is often tight and the lifting window short.

FAQ
What is Q460C used for?

High-strength steel for heavy loads and long spans, where a standard Q345 section would have to be deeper or heavier to do the same job.

Can you supply the frame in a specific grade?

Yes — Q235, Q345 and Q460C are all supplied, in I-beam, H-beam, channel and angle sections. Specification Q345B / Q460C is used for the heavy-duty range.

Is the finish painted or galvanized?

Either, and we will say which suits the location and the look. Paint is common on visible commercial frames; galvanizing is preferred for aggressive environments and hidden parts.

What bolts are used?

Grade 8.8 high-strength bolts with a specified minimum tensile strength. Welded connections are also available; weld strength is stated per project.

Can the frame be adjusted later?

Yes. A bolted, clear-span frame allows layouts to be re-planned as tenancy changes, which matters more in commercial buildings than in industrial ones.

Is steel suitable in an earthquake zone?

Yes — steel's toughness and ductility let the frame absorb seismic movement. Frames are calculated for the seismic load at your specific site.

How is a large frame shipped?

Heavy sections ship as bundles; oversize members go on roll-on/roll-off ships, barges or specially equipped vehicles.
