40m Clear Span Steel Workshop Building

Product Description
Column-Free Steel Storage Workshop — 40 m Clear Span
Column-Free Steel Storage Workshops — 40 m Clear Span

A clear-span steel warehouse with no columns in the storage area — up to 40 m. Forklifts move in straight lines, racking goes where the floor plan needs it, and the whole floor is usable. Frames are welded H-section steel, fabricated to your drawing and bolted together on site.

Why the Clear Span Matters

Columns cost money twice: once to build, and every day afterwards in lost storage space and slower handling. A 40 m clear span removes the internal columns altogether, so:

  • Forklift routes run straight across the building instead of weaving between posts
  • Racking is laid out for storage density, not to fit around columns
  • Loading bays can sit anywhere along the elevation
  • The floor plan can change later without hitting a structural constraint
Frame and Section Sizes

Main frame: welded H-section steel columns and beams in Q235B or Q355B. Section depth grows with the span, so a 40 m rafter is a substantially heavier member than a 20 m one. We size the frame from your loads rather than from a stock template.

Secondary Framing and Channels

At long spans the secondary framing does real work:

  • American standard channels to ASTM A572 Gr.50 — C9×134 (9 inch, 134 lb/ft) for high-capacity members
  • C and Z purlins in Q235B
  • Knee braces, tie tubes, round bar bracing, and angle, bar or pipe vertical and horizontal support

We quote weights per metre on the sections we propose, so the freight and customs figures are known before the order, not after.

Roof and Wall

Cladding: steel sheet or sandwich panel — EPS, PU, glass wool or rock wool.

Doors: sandwich panel sliding door or rolling metal door.

Windows: aluminum alloy or PVC panel window.

Where It Suits
  • Dust-proof workshops
  • Electrostatic (ESD-controlled) workshops
  • Food and chemical processing buildings
  • Heavy industry and high-voltage plant buildings
  • Research facilities
  • Warehousing and logistics — the main use for this span
Steel at Long Span — What to Watch

Steel frames have limits, and long spans are where they show:

  • Fire: bare steel loses strength when hot. Where the code requires it, we apply fireproof coating or specify protected sections.
  • Corrosion: humid, coastal or chemical sites need a proper coating system or galvanizing, not a thin paint film.
  • Low temperature: very cold sites need steel with tested low-temperature impact toughness, not standard grade.

We raise these at quotation stage rather than after delivery. If your site is high-corrosion or very cold, say so at the start and the specification changes accordingly.

Cutting and Drilling

Members can be supplied cut and drilled to drawing, so work on site is assembly rather than fabrication. Cutting and drilling are quoted as part of the package.

What We Need to Quote
  1. Clear span required, and building length
  2. Eave height, and whether an overhead crane is needed
  3. Floor loading and racking layout, if known
  4. Location and loads — wind, snow, seismic, and whether the site is coastal
  5. Steel standard and grade — GB (Q235B / Q355B) or ASTM
  6. Roof and wall — sheet or sandwich panel, and thickness
  7. Doors — number, size and type (forklift traffic needs the right door)
  8. Any special requirement — dust control, ESD, fireproofing

Design is free. Send these and we return a drawing and a price.

Packing and Delivery

Large orders ship in bulk; smaller orders are packed with steel strip. A 20ft container takes about 25 tons and a 40ft container about 26 tons, so loading is planned against tonnage, not volume alone. Standard frames can ship quickly; fabricated project buildings run 30-60 days from approved drawings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum clear span?

Up to 40 m with no internal columns. Longer spans are possible with a different structural system — ask us and we will tell you honestly which system suits.

Why remove the columns?

Storage density and handling speed. No columns means racking can be laid out to the plan and forklifts travel in straight lines.

Which steel grades do you use?

Q235B or Q355B for the main frame, with ASTM A572 Gr.50 channels where higher capacity is needed. Standard: GB, ASTM or AISI.

What if the site is coastal or very cold?

The specification changes. Coastal and chemical sites get galvanizing or a heavier coating system; cold sites get steel with tested low-temperature impact toughness.

Can you supply cut and drilled members?

Yes. Cutting and drilling are part of the package, so site work is assembly rather than fabrication.

How is it packed?

Bulk for large orders, steel strip for smaller ones. A 20ft container takes about 25 tons and a 40ft about 26 tons.
